Works Of Malcolm Corley On Display At The E

Malcolm Corley says that he has always liked to draw and paint, but his mother, Maria, remembers that he started drawing around the age of 2 or 3, when she noticed him following along with the television show “Blue’s Clues.” “That was around the same time he was diagnosed with pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (PDD NOS),” said Maria, who added that PDD NOS as a specific autism diagnosis is no longer in use.

Maria later noticed Malcolm’s ability to copy “Dr. Seuss” drawings with accuracy, drawing certain favorites from memory. Malcolm’s school teachers noticed his artistic skill and encouraged him to develop his talents. Malcolm has been recognized for his art with awards, and one of his pieces was chosen to hang in the Hempfield School District administration building.

Malcom is now in 12th grade at Hempfield High School, and 14 of his drawings and paintings in a variety of styles are on display at the Emerald Foundation Community Campus (The E), 2120 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, through mid-December. The exhibit is part of the Emerald Foundation Emerging Artist Program (EFEAP). The goal of EFEAP is to support the creative lives of artists in the community. “We are committed to providing support, resources, and a platform that connects these new artists with communities within Lancaster County,” said Laurie Cubell, executive director of the Emerald Foundation. A public reception for Malcolm will be held on Sunday, Dec. 10, from 2 to 4 p.m. In the case of inclement weather, the reception will be rescheduled for Sunday, Dec. 17.
